The 61st edition of the Argungu Fishing Festival has opened with a record-breaking 59-kilogram fish, setting the tone for one of Nigeria’s most celebrated cultural gatherings.
The historic catch was recorded during the opening competition in Argungu town, Kebbi State, drawing cheers from thousands of spectators who gathered along the Matan Fada River to witness the annual spectacle.
The fish was reportedly caught by Abubakar Usman, a local fisherman from the Mayama area of Kebbi State. Festival officials described the 59kg catch as the largest recorded in this year’s competition.
The Argungu Fishing Festival, held in Argungu, is one of West Africa’s most prominent cultural and tourism events. Established decades ago, the festival combines traditional fishing contests with cultural displays, music, and exhibitions aimed at promoting heritage and economic activity.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in a message marking the festival’s commencement, reportedly praised the event for preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage and promoting unity.
Local authorities said the festival is expected to attract tourists, cultural enthusiasts, and investors from across Nigeria and beyond, reinforcing Kebbi State’s position as a key destination for cultural tourism.
Media organisations including Punch and Channels Television have reported extensively on the opening ceremony and the record catch.
The festival continues in the coming days with more competitions and cultural showcases expected to draw large crowds.
